Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton bid an emotional farewell to Mercedes on Sunday, marking the end of a record-breaking 12-year partnership with the team.
“We dreamed a lot, but together we believed,” Hamilton said after finishing fourth in the season finale. His race began in 16th position, a setback caused by a plastic bollard wedged under his car during qualifying of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“Thank you for all the courage, the determination, the passion, and everything in supporting me. What started out as a leap of faith turned into a journey into the history books. We did everything together, and I’m so, so grateful to everyone,” he added.
Hamilton capped the emotional evening with a dramatic celebration, performing smoking ‘doughnut’ spins on the finish straight before stepping out, kneeling beside his car, and kissing it.
In a heartfelt moment, Hamilton embraced race winner Lando Norris, whose triumph secured McLaren their first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years—a poignant nod to Hamilton’s first F1 team.
Lewis Hamilton’s 12 years with Mercedes have been nothing short of historic. Together, they achieved six drivers’ titles, eight constructors’ championships, 84 wins, 78 poles, and 153 podium finishes.
Hamilton’s career accomplishments extend far beyond his time at Mercedes. His first world title came with McLaren in 2008, a team also powered by Mercedes engines. With 105 career wins, he remains the most successful driver in Formula 1 history.
“Every lap I’ve ever done has been powered by the three-pointed star of Mercedes,” Hamilton reflected, underscoring the depth of his connection with the team.
Team principal Toto Wolff praised Hamilton’s performance and assured him of his lasting place in the Mercedes family.
“Lewis, that was the drive of a world champion. You will always be part of our family,” Wolff told him after the race, adding that Mercedes would be cheering him on whenever they couldn’t compete for victory.
Lewis Hamilton admitted that leaving Mercedes had been far more difficult than he anticipated.
“It’s a beautiful day, but a very strange feeling. I can’t really put into words what I’m feeling at the moment, but ultimately, it’s just gratitude,” he shared during the pre-race drivers’ parade.
The season had its challenges, with Hamilton expressing frustration at the car’s performance and struggles in qualifying. Despite those hurdles, his unwavering commitment and remarkable achievements will forever define his legacy with Mercedes.
