In spring 2024, Garland Independent School District in Texas conducted their own study, which revealed that students engaging with Khan Academy scored significantly higher on the PSAT and Checkpoint assessments compared to those with minimal or no usage.* To understand the drivers behind these impressive results, I spoke with Dina Neyman, Director of District Success at Khan Academy.

Why partner with Garland ISD?

Garland ISD had a defined goal: to focus on mathematics growth within their SAT scores. Their collaborative spirit made them an ideal partner for Khan Academy Districts.

What were the goals for this pilot?

The primary aim was to help more students pass and succeed on the SAT.

How did the Khan Academy and Garland teams collaborate?

The team focused on tracking skill progress in Algebra, the area with most need. Once students showed proficiency/mastery in one level (e.g., foundations), they’d move to the next level.

What results did you see?

In the end, Garland ISD reported that students using Khan Academy scored at statistically higher rates than students with little to no Khan Academy usage on both the PSAT and the Checkpoint assessment.

Dina expressed her excitement about the results, noting the short time frame of the pilot. She looks forward to extending this success throughout a full school year.

This partnership highlights how targeted collaboration and focused educational tools can close math gaps to increase SAT scores. See what a partnership with Khan Academy Districts can do for your district’s SAT prep.
